The Wissahickon Trail Classic offer a 5K guided hike as an alternative to the 10K cross-country run. The hike is designed for WTC participants who prefer a slower pace and a chance to learn about Wissahickon ecology as a part of their walking experience.
Adults and kids who are up for a moderate hike on both flat and hilly terrain should consider the hike as a fun and educational way to be part of the WTC. The 5K hike includes sections along Forbidden Drive as well as the wooded upper foot trails that parallel the Wissahickon.
In addition to the fresh air and sounds of the creek, last year’s hike highlights included singing Acadian flycatchers, magnolia warblers, wild ginger, and blooming mountain laurel. Experienced WRV hike leaders will provide an introduction to the basics of plant identification and ecological relationships, as well as interpretation of bird and other animal behavior, all in connection to WRV’s mission to get the whole community working for ecological restoration.
